Want to Snag a Coveted Career? Make Yourself Stand Out from the Rest

“Why should we hire you?”

This may be a really old interview question, but it can still catch you by surprise every time it's thrown your way, especially if your circumstances have changed and you've taken a new direction job-wise. All those practised speeches are forgotten, once recruitment asks this particular query. Add to this the new rules that require jobseekers to do more to find work, the harder it will be to ace an interview.

But why not let your resume speak for itself?

If there's nothing new or impressive in your CV, however, it probably won't say anything great about you at all. For this reason, you should strive to stay current in your field or gather new skills and knowledge. Doing so is the perfect solution to make you stand out from a sea of job applicants.

Be Relevant

Candidates are screened based on how suitable they are for a particular position. If none of your qualifications satisfies the job requirements, you can kiss that career option goodbye. So make sure you're relevant for the job. If you're planning to switch careers, give yourself ample time to prepare for the big change. Enrol in the education or training programme it requires, and get a certification before you apply. You should also get as much work experience as possible. Here are some of your options:

Choose wisely which job position to apply in

Say you've been working for a very long time. When you apply for an entry-level role in a completely different field, you could be tagged as overqualified. Most employers are wary of hiring such candidates, as they're likely to resign if something better, more befitting comes along.

If you insist, you should be ready to explain why you want the job in the first place, and give your word that you won't bail on them. It would be better though, if you'll have the necessary skills and training needed for the job, regardless of how limited. This way, you can apply as an asbestos surveyor through Future Select, for instance, with as little hitch as possible.

Be proactive

Even if the company you want to work for didn't release any official job posting, apply anyway. Being proactive gets you noticed, even before the real race begins. There's also a possibility that they want to keep recruitment hush-hush, and to present yourself at the opportune time could be your lucky break. Just think, if you're the only person who applied for the job, you'll get the attention that you need.

Looking for employment is no joke, which is why getting the best education is highly recommended. Whether you study abroad in Australia through DEC International or not, good grades and notable achievements will get you a long way.
